This paper looks at major policy changes from 1960 to 2008 in order to investigate to what extent they have impacted the cities of El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. These two cities offer an interesting urban juxtaposition as they reside on either side of the U.S./Mexico border yet only 20 miles separate their respective city centers. By conducting a longitudinal land cover analysis over these four decades, this study attempts to understand how the macro level of organization (policies delegated at the federal government level) influence organization at the micro level (local policy). Understanding the relationship between certain categories of immigration policy and organizational space could comment on the role of planning in border conditions.

Historically, Newtown creek has served as an industrial dumping ground and sewage runoff site. Through a comparative analysis of the response to other Superfund Sites in the city, this project aimed to understand how a lack of physical access to the creek perpetuates a severe lack of advocacy and awareness of the hazardous industrial zone to its surrounding communities.

in the course “Conflict Urbanism: Puerto Rico Now”, we addressed the ways in which disasters have the ability to shape spatial inequalities. In order to fully understand the impacts that Hurricane Maria had on the Island of Puerto Rico we applied a holistic lens, looking at both the physical and social impacts of this disaster. In order to do this, we conducted a series of multi-criteria decision analyses that displayed which municipalities appear to have been most impacted, with a goal not only of informing the community, but empowering them to take an active role in disaster preparedness and mitigation.

For the course, “Datamining the City”, my colleagues and I created this participatory platform for residents of the neighborhood to understand the effect the up-zoning might have on property values in the community.

Beginning in the 1960s and continuing to present day, the United States and Europe have been greatly affected by the process of deindustrialization.  The driving force behind this concept is the outsourcing of manufacturing to developing nations for cheaper pay.  What is left is a post-industrial landscape full of run-down railways and empty warehouses.  

Portland is an example of a successful post-industrial landscape.  Instead of demolishing industrial buildings or leaving them to rot, most of the buildings in the downtown area have been restored and reprogrammed into a unique urban-scape.

My final project for ARCH 102 called for a redesign of the architecture building at our school. Our current studio space is located in the basement of a resident hall with minimal windows. Thus, I wanted the studio to utilize the sun we get here in San Diego as much as possible and have a strong relationship with the outdoors.There are windows at the top of the structure as well as the openings along the struts which allows for a bright and open space that gives the illusion that the building is much larger than it actually is. 

The concave walls allow for a continuous open space that is not directly segregated by walls but still provides a sense of distinction from room to room. Thus, different types of studios in the art department can occur simultaneously while promoting interaction among the various departments. Students can congregate in the small courtyard between the existing building and the new studio or the large open space at the center of the building.

The South Waterfront Development in Portland, OR is a nearly 25-year project in the making aimed to construct 26 towers along the southern shore of the Willamette river. Sandwiched between Interstate 5 and the river, the area easily becomes a privatized island for its residents. Within this isolated community, each tower stands within its own block allowing little room for public space. 

The average block size in Los Angeles is about four times the size of the south waterfront development's and Manhattan's are nearly three times the size. San Diego and downtown Portland's blocks are comparable to the South Waterfront's in size yet each block contains anywhere from three to five buildings per block verses one per block. By combining together a few of these blocks it opens up the space and provides the potential for a public realm. Ideally this introduction of public space would draw in people from other areas of the city. Joining the blocks allows for a permeable space that is no longer centered around the car, and rather around community and personal interaction.
